Ou ici sans les photos: First-ever littleBits store combines retailing with a laboratory, and experiments with open source creative collaboration in a retail space

If you are feeling left out from all the people building cool tech projects and don’t know anything between Arduino to ZigBee, make a plan to visit thelittleBits popup store in New York City. The hardware startup company opened their first physical location in SoHo and the space encourages anyone to try their hand at building an electronics project.

littleBits is an electronic building blocks system of easy to assemble circuit boards and components that snap together magnetically. There’s no soldering, wiring, or programming required. The aim of the company is to democratize hardware and empower everyone to create inventions young or old regardless of technical skill.

The 2,200 sq ft. space designed by Montreal-based Daily tours les jours is split into three sections, a demo area, retail shop and the workshop. DTLJ devised a collection of fixtures that could be rearranged to accommodate programming and events littlebits will host in the space.

The demo area displays functioning projects and shows the potential of what littleBits can do.

Dominating one entire wall is a ‘musical twister’ installation in which a group of people can make an electronic music composition by collectively touching metal pads on the wall.

In the back is the workshop area which features a series of three project tables. The projects include a Keytar (a synth guitar), a BitBot car and a self-powered drawing machine. At each of the tables, a lab coat clad littleBits expert is stationed to offer build assistance. There is also a free building table where anyone can experiment with their own ideas.

Any of the completed projects can be purchased or left behind for someone else to alter and remix. The littleBits store will test out this idea of ‘Inventions To Stay and Inventions To Go’ as a way of encouraging open source creative collaboration in a retail space.

The littleBits store feels like everything RadioShack could have been. Kids will love it and for adults it is both zen and addicting to piece something new together and see it work. CEO and founder of littleBits, Ayah Bdeir remarked that, for her, the future of retail is having the opportunity to make what you buy. The littleBits store happens to be a vision of just that.
